WHAT IS REIKI?

SIMPLE ANSWER:

Reiki (pronounced "RAY-key") is an ancient healing modality that promotes stress reduction and relaxation, and balances the body's energy centers. It is not massage, but rather an effective form of energy work that subtly manipulates universal life energy that flows through all living things. There is no risk of harm, and only positive energy is transferred. Reiki is practiced in many hospitals, medical settings and private practices all around the world. Reiki has scientific and spiritual components to it and is totally non-denominational. You can practice any religion (or none) and still benefit from Reiki.

BENEFITS OF REIKI INCLUDE

  • Boosts your immune system

  • Decreases anxiety

  • Relieves emotional and physical pain

  • Fosters natural self-healing

  • Balances energy and chakras

  • Strengthens intuition and spiritual growth

DETAILED ANSWER:

First, a brief description of energy and vibration: everything in our Universe is made up of energy, and all energy vibrates at different frequencies. It’s science. Even solid objects are made up of vibrational energy fields at the quantum level- including us. We are beings that are made up of different energy levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, and each of these levels has a vibrational frequency which combine to create our overall vibration of being. When our vibration is low, we feel sad, angry, tired, and can become ill. When our vibration is higher, we feel more relaxed, peaceful and healthy. We are able to handle the things life throws at us a little bit easier.

Energy healing has been around since ancient times. Our ancestors used all of the natural resources that were provided to them from the earth, the universe, and themselves - all of the same things that are still available to us today. Reiki is one form of energy healing that can activate the healing energy that exists inside each and every one of us. Reiki was discovered and developed in Japan by a man named Dr. Mikao Usui, and was brought to the west by a woman named Hawayo Takata where it evolved further.

"Rei" means "universal life" and "Ki" means "vital energy." Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. It is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing by balancing the body's energy centers. When your body is in a completely relaxed state, it provides the optimal conditions for healing. We have seven main energy centers (called Chakras) in our bodies that are responsible for our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. It seems more evident in times of extreme stress that these are all connected. Stress from work, grief, finances, home life, social situations, heartbreaks, environmental factors, and what we eat and drink all have an effect on us and can create energy imbalances, blockages of energy and stagnant energy- all of which manifest in physical and emotional symptoms. Grief, in particular, takes a significant toll on a person mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually, so it makes sense that Reiki is not only beneficial for everyone, but ideal for the grieving person which is why I also trained in Grief Reiki.

A Reiki professional is trained and attuned to universal/divine energy in order to help clear and balance the body's energy centers so that energy can flow freely for optimal health in mind, body and spirit. While Reiki can help with the process, it requires participation on the part of the client to be open and receptive to their own healing as well. YOU are your very best healer.

Every Reiki professional operates a little differently. I enjoy complimenting my practice with additional modalities such as sound therapy, aromatherapy, healing crystals and guided meditation. The use of these modalities in combination increases the healing potential of Reiki. I have created a sacred space designed to facilitate optimal healing and a calming environment. Clients lie down or sit comfortably in a chair and are fully clothed. Reiki energy is transferred through a gentle, non-invasive touch, and/or from just hovering my hands a few inches away. I am intuitively guided to focus on the areas that need most attention, however Reiki is an intellient energy that goes where it is needed most.

There are three options to receive Reiki: either a session in person, Distance Reiki, or learning how to do it for yourself (Self-Reiki). Distance Reiki is an under-appreciated way of receiving Reiki; since energy is limitless, it can be given and received from any distance in the world with incredible results.

Reiki has been an integral part of my own necessary healing, and I love being able to pass these benefits along to my clients and students!
